About the Cheese

Stinking Bishop is a renowned soft-textured washed rind cheese known for its distinctive, meaty pungency that intensifies with age.

Handmade by Charles Martell on his farm in the heart of Gloucestershire, the cheese gets its unique aroma from being washed in perry made from the Stinking Bishop pear.

Launched in 1994, this award-winning British cheese has gained a strong following for its unusual and compelling characteristics. The cheese typically has the texture of thick clotted cream but can sometimes be spoonable rather than sliceable.

Enjoy Stinking Bishop with complex white wines, elegant red wines and craft cider for a delightful experience.

About the Cheesemaker

Charles Martell & Son, based at Hunts Court Farm in Gloucestershire, has been making exceptional cheeses for 50 years.

Charles Martell, deeply committed to preserving rural heritage, began breeding the critically endangered Old Gloucester cows and making traditional Double Gloucester cheese. He later revived the lost Single Gloucester cheese, earning it Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status in 1997.

In 1994, Charles developed and launched Stinking Bishop, now the most famous of their seven cheese varieties.

The farm is also home to one of the oldest herds of Gloucester cattle, established in 1972. The farm's commitment to preserving these cows and traditional cheesemaking methods has drawn significant attention and acclaim.
