About the Cheese
This memorable and characterful cheddar is quintessentially Scottish!
Crafted on the island it’s named after, this mature, cloth-bound farmhouse cheddar is made from raw cow’s milk sourced from the farm’s closed, mixed-breed herd. The herd predominantly consists of Friesian cattle, complemented by Norwegian Red, Swiss Brown, Dairy Shorthorn, Meuse Rhine Issel, and Jersey breeds.
Matured for a minimum of 12 months, the truckles develop a strong, sharp, and tangy flavour profile with a characteristic crumbly cheddar texture.
Occasionally, you may find a slight blue vein, which only enhances its complex flavour.
Cheesemaker: The Reade Family
In 1979, Jeff and Christine (Chris) Reade moved from Somerset to the rugged Isle of Mull, settling in the derelict farm of Scriob Ruadh.
Through hard work and innovation, they transformed the farm into a thriving dairy operation, now famous for its exceptional cheese.
The Reades formed a symbiotic relationship with Tobermory Distillery, using its fermented grain by-products to supplement their cows' diet, adding a unique depth to their cheese's flavour.
Starting with just 10 cows, their herd has grown to 130 mixed-breed cattle, bred for hardiness and high protein. The farm now includes modern cow housing, milking facilities, cheesemaking rooms, aging cellars, and a hydroelectric plant.
Today, the farm and its cheesemaking operations are managed by the Reades' children and grandchildren, continuing the legacy of producing renowned Isle of Mull cheese.
