About the Cheese

Gorwydd Caerphilly is an award-winning, handmade Caerphilly cheese crafted by the Trethowan brothers in North Somerset.

Often described as a a "cheese in three acts", it features an edible mushroomy rind, a creamy and glossy cream-line layer, and a crumbly, citrussy, and bright center.

Made using raw cow's milk and GM-free animal rennet, Gorwydd Caerphilly stays true to its traditional roots. The process of hand-working the curd and encouraging the natural mould rind development ensures that this mature cheese retains its authentic character and depth of flavour.

Enjoy the complex, well-balanced taste of Gorwydd Caerphilly with wheat beer or fruity white wines.

Cheesemaker: Trethowan Brothers

The Trethowan family has been crafting award-winning, traditional cheeses for over 25 years. Founded by brothers Todd and Maugan Trethowan, their cheese-making journey began in 1996 on the family farm in Ceredigion, West Wales. After apprenticing with the last traditional Caerphilly maker in the UK, Todd perfected the recipe and launched Gorwydd Caerphilly. Due to growing demand, the production moved to a new dairy in North Somerset in 2014.

At their dairy on Puxton Court Farm, just five miles from Cheddar, the Trethowan Brothers continue to create their renowned cheeses, including Gorwydd Caerphilly and Pitchfork Cheddar, using raw milk from a single herd of cows.

Their commitment to traditional methods and high-quality ingredients ensures that each cheese embodies the rich heritage of British cheesemaking.

The family's mission is to share the experience of hand-crafted cheeses with a wider community, preserving and celebrating the traditions of Great British cheese making.
