Tea: Darjeeling First Flush Blend
Regular price £8.05Black Loose Leaf tea in a caddy
This exquisite luxury Darjeeling First Flush loose-leaf tea delicately combines the fresh, invigorating and grassy qualities of the revered spring flush tea leaves with the stunning muscatel hints that are characteristic of this well-loved and nuanced tea.
Darjeeling is one of the most revered and well-loved tea districts in India - and in the world. Tea farmers in this area have been passing down expert tea knowledge from generation to generation for almost 200 years.
The succulent, silvery leaves of this Darjeeling loose leaf tea offer a gentle sweetness and refreshingly astringent flavour, which can be enjoyed at any time of the day.
Darjeeling is technically a black tea. However, the processing of the tea is more similar to that of green tea - opting for minimal oxidisation - before being rolled in order to preserve the natural flavours. The tea is much sweeter than most black and green teas. It is lightly coloured and has a strong, sweet scent.
For connoisseurs
Unlike most Indian teas, the Darjeeling tea leaves derive from the small-leaved Camellia Sinenisis plant, a vegetation which adds beneficial antioxidants to the tea. This is opposed to the large-leaved Assam plant, Camellia Sinensis Assamica.
Tea planting in the Indian district of Darjeeling was introduced in 1841 by Arthur Campbell, a civil surgeon of the Indian Medical Service. Campbell was transferred to Darjeeling in 1839 from Kathmandu, Nepal. In 1841, he brought seeds of the Chinese tea plant, Camellia Sinensis from Kumaun, and began to experiment with tea planting in Darjeeling. The British government also established tea nurseries during that period. Commercial development began during the 1850's.
