About the Cheese
Pitchfork Cheddar is a mature, raw and organic traditional cloth-bound Cheddar made by the renowned makers of Gorwydd Caerphilly.
This award-winning cheese is golden in colour with a typical crumbly cheddar texture and the occasional blue vein.
Made from organic raw milk, it boasts a rich and creamy texture with a full, nutty, and slightly earthy flavour.
Produced by brothers Todd and Maugan Trethowan at Trethowan’s Dairy in Somerset, just five miles from the town of Cheddar, Pitchfork Cheddar is matured for a minimum of 12 months.
This exceptional cheese was voted 4th best cheese overall in the world and won three awards at the World Cheese Awards 2019-2020: Super Gold, Best Extra Mature Cheddar, and Best British.
Enjoy Pitchfork Cheddar with craft ales and medium-bodied red wines for a delightful pairing experience.
Cheesemaker: Trethowan Brothers
The Trethowan family has been crafting award-winning, traditional cheeses for over 25 years. Founded by brothers Todd and Maugan Trethowan, their cheese-making journey began in 1996 on the family farm in Ceredigion, West Wales. After apprenticing with the last traditional Caerphilly maker in the UK, Todd perfected the recipe and launched Gorwydd Caerphilly. Due to growing demand, the production moved to a new dairy in North Somerset in 2014.
At their dairy on Puxton Court Farm, just five miles from Cheddar, the Trethowan Brothers continue to create their renowned cheeses, including Gorwydd Caerphilly and Pitchfork Cheddar, using raw milk from a single herd of cows.
Their commitment to traditional methods and high-quality ingredients ensures that each cheese embodies the rich heritage of British cheesemaking.
The family's mission is to share the experience of hand-crafted cheeses with a wider community, preserving and celebrating the traditions of Great British cheese making.
Awards
It's Trethowan Brothers' commitment to using raw milk and traditional methods that has resulted in Pitchfork receiving Artisan Somerset Presidia status from the Slow Food Foundation, one of only three cheddar makers to do so.
Since they started making Pitchfork Cheddar in 2017, it has been regularly awarded a Gold and Super Gold medal, and voted Best of British at the World Cheese Awards.
They have also won Gold awards at the International Cheese Awards and continue to receive high ratings in the Great Taste Awards.
